Who is King of the Universe in your life?
Some sins seem ""harmless."" They are not too disruptive to life. Laziness is one such sin. One young man I know had a tendency to avoid doing anything he thought was too involved or difficult. It wasn't because he was incompetent most of the time. He didn't want to be bothered with any activity that he could not complete quickly and with minimal effort. He was lazy. He said he wanted to honor God in his life, but he didn't realize how God views laziness. He was well aware of the passages that condemn laziness (such as Proverbs 6:6-12), but he did not see his laziness as that offensive to the Lord.
I suggested he consider laziness from God's perspective. When he refuses to be responsible he is essentially saying, ""If I am inconvenienced, I don't want to be bothered"" - regardless of what God requires! In other words, he was placing his comfort over God's commands. This is a form of self-worship. He was acting as if he is the ""King of the Universe.""
He now understands why laziness is so offensive to God. As you look at your lifestyle, do you honor God by fulfilling your responsibilities diligently? Your words may proclaim Him ""King of the Universe,"" but what does your lifestyle say? Who is king of your universe?
