In the Contemporary Issues course, you will review the basic elements of the counseling process and then study a variety of issues currently prevalent in the church. Contemporary Issues Course Topics
For those working toward the Certificate in Biblical Counseling, the following requirements must be completed during the Contemporary Issues course: - Completely read: What to Do on Thursday (Adams) and any three of the following options: Leaving Yesterday Behind (Hines); The Enemy Within (Lundgaard) , Idols of the Heart (Fitzpatrick); Counsleing the Sexual Addict (Gallagher); From Forgiven to Forgiving (Adams); In the Arena of the Mind (Vandergriff); or Is God Really in Control (Bridges). Write a review for each book (no longer than seven pages) highlighting what you think are the strengths and weaknesses of each book. Include the author's reason for writing on the topic and the biblical perspective the reader is to gain from the book. In your summary include whether you support or disagree with the author using Scriptural references.
- Create three different homework assignments to use in possible future counseling cases that address the topics of: idols of the heart; forgiveness; and sexual issues (e.g., pornography, premarital sex, recovering from sexual abuse). Remember that good homework has both academic and application elements. Each homework assignment should be in a word document and no longer than seven pages. The studies must be completed prior to taking the final exam.
- Complete the final examination consisting of case studies based on the lectures and reading material. It is preferred that your work be in a word document or as a PDF. An administration fee of $50 can be paid by check or credit card for reviewing your course work. All work must be sent to Sherry Allchin.
